Live Life Lux Events are an opportunity to create space for joy and fun, to stop and reflect.

Through Live Life Lux events we can connect deeply with this one precious life with great intention.

Our first event was a BYOB event at Rosebridge Farm & Sanctuary in Montgomery County, PA. Rosebridge is a self-ascribed “hidden piece of paradise, as it is home to many rescued animals.” They are 100% correct about that. They offer in-person bottle feeding and snuggle animal husbandry sessions and so much more. This truly is a magical place nestled in suburban Montgomery County, right outside of Philadelphia.

Lux Summit Studio, in line with our Live Life Lux philosophy, hosted an event which included baby goat snuggles, calf feeding, piglet pets, and a farm tour. The evening concluded sipping wine with the goats while the piglets were put to bed and the rescue camels (you heard me right) settled in for the night.

We were so grateful to be surrounded by familiar faces of past clients and friends as well as fresh faces.

Life Lessons from a Philadelphia Photographer

Last month in the Live Life Lux blog we touched on Mary Oliver’s question “What is it you plan to do with this one precious life?” At face value, a beautiful and completely overwhelming question. That is, until we put it in context. The stanza’s preceding the question hold insight. We discover that it is in practicing stillness and presence – it is in simplicity of stopping that we “do” the most. 

“I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?

Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?”

This month we’re exploring the third tenant of Live Life Lux; being present and connecting deeply to this one precious life. Like all things worthy of our time and energy, presence and connection are a practice. We don’t master it instantly, or maybe ever, but there is joy in becoming. We use intention to create space and time to connect what matters most to us. Regularly, we make little choices to keep us grounded and balanced. We go for a walk, play with our kids (furry or human) or meditate. Periodically, we make big choices that anchor us to our why. We bring new life into the family (furry or human), we take a vacation and discover a new world or we have a photo session and create beautiful art to treasure for generations. 

Here are some ways our clients shared their connection to the presence and this one precious life through their photo session experience.

Denna shared her family session experience, “Our individual conversations with Kristen about our life right now really encourage us to open up as individuals about what life means to us, what our family members mean to us, what we love most about each other and JJ and our little furry family members. We both left each of our conversations with Kristen enlightened and feeling very joyful and present. What I think was really amazing, was watching the emotions unfold in Jon as he walked through his own experience with Kristen. I could see a difference in him after he shared his view of our life with her; he was refreshed and more present than before. It seemed as though our individual conversations with Kristen gifted us new eyes to see our world.

All of our emotions were brought to the surface during our session. We played, smiled, and laughed. We hugged our puppies and snuggled the chicken. We were once again left with an amazing sense of presence afterwards. We continued on our special Friday by going out to lunch and spending some more time as a family – a day we wouldn’t usually have together due to work schedules.

One client shares how creating space for a new experience like a boudoir session transformed how she saw herself, connecting her more deeply to her best self,  “I never thought I’d do a session. I’m single, go to church every week. Didn’t think it was for me. Not skinny. Dislike my body. But I decided that I wanted this for me. And I’m so happy I did it. Just for me. I love seeing my body the way I’ve never thought it could look.”

Even in a branding photo experience, we can be transformed, as Craig shares, “I think it’s helped my confidence. It’s kind of a very profound experience to have someone capture the ideal, best you.

There will be times when we lose focus. We forget that we’re doing all this – life –  to have daily joy. We’re not waiting for joy to happen once we magically arrive at a destination. The destination is never reached because it’s not real and an ever moving target. Joy is now, a choice and a creation. We say yes to joy every time we choose ourselves, everytime we choose to let go of our expectations, our own time lines and open to possibilities bigger than we could’ve ever imagined. We can always choose again when we find ourselves disconnected. The future and the past don’t exist. They cease to exist anywhere beyond our minds. We can always embrace the present.

A mentor’s wisdom on finding the joy

In the coming weeks and months we’re going to be talking about living life lux – what it means and why it matters. A mentor once shared a story with me that became a governing principle of my life. This story is the foundation of Live Life Lux. So I’ll share it here. 

Don’t lose sight of the big picture

There was a man that went for a walk. On his walk, he passed by a building under construction. As he passed by he saw three men performing the same tasks working on the building. He asked the first, “What are you doing?” The man replied, “Laying brick.” He asked the second “What are you doing?”. “Making a wall.”, said the construction worker. He asked the third man, “What are you doing?” and the builder shared, “I’m building a cathedral.” 

It’s easy to get lost in the monotony of the day-to-day and lose sight of the big picture, what we’re working toward, what we’re building, why we’re doing all this. It’s easy to get lost in laying the brick and lose touch with the pride and joy (and even fun) of building the cathedral. The foundation of our cathedral is the principle of Live Life Lux.

By acknowledging the good we find abundance

The philosopher Eckhart Tolle says, “Acknowledging the good you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” Cultivating gratitude is the first tenant of Live Life Lux. Today we want to focus on our gratitude for you. You are our why. Every celebration in your life deserves to be honored and immortalized. It is our greatest joy to share in your journey through your photo session experience. 
In 2022 we celebrated over 150 cathedrals being built through transformational photo experiences. Thank you for trusting us to help you honor the story of your life. Here we’ve compiled some of our favorite moments from a year filled with creating timeless heirlooms, helping you, our clients, stop to reconnect with your why and affirm your life and paths that brought you to where you are now. You’ve come so far.

The importance of showing up for yourself

Every moment you show up for yourself and those you love is you building your cathedral brick by brick. We’re happy to be here to help you stay connected to that truth and remember the big picture by immortalizing every brick you place. From courage, strength, and resilience expressed through a boudoir photo experience to the joy, fun and beautiful chaos of family and pet photo sessions. From honoring the legacy and the indelible mark made on our hearts through a senior pet session to celebrating personal achievement, goals met and dreams yet to come true through personal branding and headshot portfolios. These are the moments that make up your life well lived. This is how you Live Life Lux. 

In 2023 the words of Abraham Hicks guide our gratitude forward. “You have to be satisfied by what is while you’re reaching for more.” Here’s to a year of moving forward and reaching for new heights.

This Montgomery County rainy day family photo session reminds us that sometimes the best family days are a washout.

It was a warm summer day at Greta’s North Wales home. She took the day off to reconnect and reclaim time with her family. It was also pouring rain. I marveled when I arrived, camera in hand, as their lively world unfolded before me. For the first few minutes they raced around the home showing me favorite toys, dance moves, games and general gymnastics that all kids love to perform when they’re so excited they don’t know what do with themselves.

It wasn’t long before they were running towards their rain coats, goulashes and umbrellas. This is the point at which any mom would be tempted to say no. Muddy, drenched children does not sound like the best photo op. Yet, Greta wanted to celebrate everything she loves most about her kids through her unique family photo session. Their charismatic spirit and blissful joy through everyday life is a powerful inspiration and reminder of what really matters. That life perspective is a beautiful place to be transported to every day as they see these moments displayed in their home through their powerful wall art. What greets Greta as she walks through her home is the truth that some days we need to stop and pay tribute the beauty and gifts in the chaos and in the imperfections.

It’s in-between our well laid plans that the real living happens – the perfect goodness. And, yes, sometimes that means grabbing the rain coat and goulashes and making the most of a rainy day.

Lena wanted to pick flowers for an bouquet she planned to design with her mother. She shared with me that her favorite thing was the flower arrangement class that she and her mother took together recently. Lena found her best green snippers and delicately went about clipping the very best flowers from the backyard. Then from the side yard and front yard. No flower bed was left untouched. Later she arranged her flowers in a pint size mason jar and proudly thrust it towards me. She declared that she made it just for me. That’s when I asked for a towel to wipe up the puddle my heart had become on the floor.

Sammy was poised to show me his very best and biggest puddle hops. He found the widest and deepest puddle. Then, he took a running start and SPLASH! Over and over again he gave thanks for the rain by simply enjoying it. I can’t think of the last time I enjoyed the rain as much Sammy.

It reminded me to think of his beaming face every time I’m hurriedly dodging drops or when I’ve lost my connection to the goodness the earth is giving me.

We can be tempted to shutdown our plans when they’re not running according to our original vision. Often when we lean into the changes that we did not plan and can’t control, we can find a goodness we didn’t expect. We find new gratitude and perspective for what we have. Enjoy leaning into the challenges this week brings you and listening to what the world is offering you.

It’s so important for the autonomy of a couples relationship to be reaffirmed and embraced as often as possible. Before there was kids and mortgages and pets… there was the two of you.

When Dad’s got you.

Photographing mother’s lost in savoring the joy of a deep embrace from their child is one of my favorite moments in any session.

Blue was the one the chillest dogs I’ve photographed with a family. He worried about nothing while he was surrounded by his pack.

I have never met a child with the imagination of Charlie. He doesn’t have stories. He doesn’t stop having stories. There is a genius in that imagination.

Stephanie and John had a wonderful day full of stopping, reconnecting and reclaiming time for their family, right in their own Montgomery County backyard. Their nanny dog, Blue joined in the fun too.

Stephanie is a burgeoning Lansdale business owner (Boutique Tres Bien). What I love about Stephanie is her tenacity energy and what you see is what you get attitude. What you see is class with a dose of moxie. You see beauty with an edge of determination and vigor and carefree spirit – the kind that says, “Yes. As a matter of fact, I’m going to wear of long, flowing gorgeous teal chiffon dress while I play with my kids in the backyard because I deserve to feel beautiful whenever the hell I want and No. No I’m not going to cry or care when dirt inevitably finds its way on this dress while I’m searching for ants, or playing airplane or stealing hugs, because life was made for beautiful dresses and backyards and mud and sometimes all at once.”

John a hard working, dedicated family man. I loved John’s soft-spoken deep gratitude for everything real and true in his life. At their design consult, following their session, he gave me the gift of luxuriating in their joy and perspective from the day they’d claimed for their family. This gift came when, immediately following their cinematic slide show of photos in the North Wales studio, he said, “You know, sometimes it just feels like you’re running around, chasing kids all – scooping them up from here or there or getting into this or that, but when I stop and look at it from this perspective and see it this way, I can see this is everything.”

This is the beautiful chaos that is family. This is real.

Stephanie and John embrace it with every fiber of their being and for that, they will richly look back on these days of crazy adventure, every maddening and delightful moment and see it for all it truly was to them. For now and always, their best selves are immortalized in these moments and proudly displayed in their home through their wall art.

The Retrato/Portrait Project Gallery Opening:
Where Local And Global Communities Collide

You are cordially invited to celebrate the culture and people of Honduras with me on November 19th from 5:00p.m. – 8:00p.m.. I will be hosting a small gallery opening displaying a selection of pieces from the Retrato/Portrait Project; an endeavor I led in January 2017 to bring portraits to remote villages in Honduras.

Through the project over one hundred families have been provided a priceless heirloom of a family portrait. Many of you had a large part in making that happen. I’m passionate about our community to continuing learn and share in the global community. So, lets continue by gathering together and learning more about the world around us.

The gallery opening will feature guest speakers Herman and Amanda Sagastume. They will give a brief discussion on the work of Healthy Ninos Honduras (the organization I collaborate with to bring the Retrato/Portrait Project to life) and their tireless endeavor to end malnutrition in Honduras. I will also share about Retrato/Portrait Project. Enjoy beer and wine provided by Round Guys Brewing Company. A portion of beer and wine sale proceeds will go to Healthy Ninos Honduras. Enjoy light fare, also provided by Round Guys. There will be raffles from top community businesses which will help continue my work as a family photographer in Honduras.

There is rarely a time when I’m not considering how to document precious moments both personal and for others. As the miles passed by I first considered how I was going to capture this trip – my phone, Polaroids, the behemoth that is my actual camera. These were all options. Secondly, I considered how blessed we are that we have an endless array of means to capture and hold what we regard dearest. I reflected on how the family portrait and snap shot may be one of the most iconic examples of disparity – something so interwoven into our identities from the moment we enter this world (literally) until the day we die. There is truly no level of poverty so great in the United states that someone would not have (or at least at one time have had) a photo of someone or something that they love. They are heirlooms, casual files that take up real estate on our phones, tiny framed masterpieces and huge works of art. They are sometimes quiet moments we keep tucked away and other times magazine ad worthy status symbols we erect. Yet, we don’t even think twice about the fact that there remain places in the world in which no one has ever, nor will ever own a photograph. The fact that we don’t think twice about this is a reminder of the general importance of pulling ourselves out from within, stepping outside of our immediate line of sight to gain a broader world view.

On my trek toward relaxation my mind went, as it often does, to Honduras; where my heart always finds its way. Many of the people in remote areas have never had a photograph of anyone they’ve ever loved and when loved ones pass on, it is only that fuzzy and careless thing we call memory that helps them recall the details. It was then that it occurred to me that I could change this. I could humbly offer this – the act of remembering. I could go. I could capture them and give them themselves, in that moment – now, (because now is all anyone has) for them to hold onto forever.

I had no idea how exactly I was going to bring a photograph to multiple, remote villages in Honduras with no internet, much less, electricity, but come on! In the age of “there’s an app for that” and 3D printers, honestly, I wasn’t too concerned. I mean, if there’s a self scooping cat litter box, there must be a way for me to produce a high quality printed photo instantaneously. Technology did not disappoint. Furthermore, you did not disappoint. Because of your love and support I arrived in San Pedro Sula, Honduras on January 7th 2017. I photographed one hundred families. I hope to go back next year and photograph hundreds more.*

In consideration for writing this piece I was searching for some profundity to share about this trip, about Honduras, the US, about poverty and disparity, and history, but really I feel that there’s nothing new to say on these topics. Though even if it’s not new, I know it’s still relevant. I just felt the best thing it could offer was what came to me as I spoke a couple weeks ago to a group of Girl Scouts about this trip. As I grappled for simplistic, but effective language to express the deeper concepts of disparity and philanthropy to a group of eight year olds, I offered that I was simply doing something that I loved in a way that was helpful and meaningful to others and that everyone “no matter how big or small” (thanks dr. Seuss) has the ability to find something that they love (also no matter how big or small) and offer some piece of that to people around them as an act of love and kindness. This is how we make the world a better place.

It’s also through our own gratitude that we make the world a better place. It is with gratitude that we building and maintain perspective in our lives. It is not that it is impossible (nor should it be) to have negative emotions when we have gratitude, because emotions are not mutually exclusive. However, it becomes more challenging to dwell in a negative space when we’re measuring by what we are grateful for instead of measuring by what is upsetting in our lives.

I mention basic gratitude because I think we too readily jump to pity and to projections of what it means to us to have joy, happiness and success when we’re talking about countries that are, well, not the United States and I’m here to tell you we do not have it figured out and we are not the measuring stick for abundant living simply because we have more and endless choices. Rather, we should cautiously and reverently respond when met with disparity with curiosity about what it means to be happy and healthy and successful to them, not us. Not all frame work is the same.

*A quick word on the serious demeanor of some of the families pictured above. I’ve received comments on how sad, angry, upset or simply unenthused those pictured seem. One consideration I’d like to challenge viewers to take into account is to remember that at the the turn of the century (the 20th century – not the 21st century you spring chickens out there), when photography was relatively new and just gaining steam, families did not smile. The family portrait was a solemn event that required reverence. This was the one chance to immortalize the precious family name. This was not a time for smiles and giggles. This experience was more a kin to sitting in church than a modern casual day on the beach. It was important to me that I not project our current interpretation of what a beautiful family photo means. I wanted them to simply present their most honest selves. So, I didn’t ask for smiles. Nor did I construct a scene that depicted jovial lighthearted families without a care in the world. The result were piercing accounts of fierce pride in mother’s eyes, genuine joy in a father’s embrace, legitimate exhaustion and the vast depth of the arc of the emotional spectrum that is an honest family on their most honest day of living – today, this day, the only day that is guaranteed.

I’m so very excited about this new chapter of the photographic experience that I have the joy of providing to each of my clients. Wall art collections have become my new passion and the passion of each personI have the honor of immortalizing. I wanted to share my most recent collection designed by Beth and her family. These pieces tell the story of her and her first rescue – Harley which led her through her journey into becoming a veterinarian and founder of the rescue; Harley’s Haven. The story crescendos as her son, Connor adopts his first puppy and declares his desire to carry the torch and become a second generation veterinarian. The warmth I feel in my heart in having the honor of telling this story simply can’t be adequately explained in words. The most important part of all of this is the insurmountable joy that they feel every time they lay eyes on this moment in their history.

I have discussed dire circumstances at hospitals in Honduras in my previous posts. I want to take a moment and reflect on the beautiful people and culture of Honduras. I had the pleasure visiting this wonderful country shortly after a coup and during the Independence Day Celebrations. Nationalism was at high during that time and it was exciting to be a part of celebrations and discussions that involved a nation in transition.

For many of you, I personally know what your family portraits mean to you. I have had the joy of providing you with those images and seeing your faces light up and hearing your kind words about how you treasure each moment. Yet, there are so many who will never know that joy.

In my journey toward making the family portrait project in Honduras come to fruition, many shifts have developed in it’s germination (as with all things that must grow). First, the project has been retitled: Retrato/Portrait. The date of completion is Jan/Feb 2017. Thank goodness for this too, since I have a lot to prepare yet and a long way to go raising funds. Finally, a gallery has expressed interest in displaying the copies of the family portrait images in exhibition.

Biography
Kristen Kidd is a photographer and advocate living in Lansdale Pennsylvania. A native of rural, southern Virginia, she began photographing her family’s highly cultivated, though miniature, farm at the age of 15 when she picked up her father’s vintage Olympus. The desire to photograph flora and fauna soon gave way to an inclination toward people. Beginning with her early experiences photographing nursing home residents, with whom she volunteered and her mother worked, the desire to capture the dynamics of social complexities grew. Accordingly, Kristen has built a dual career track, on the one hand advocating for individuals with intellectual disabilities while, on the other, developing her photography skills and a rich portfolio of images of people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Her interest in Honduras began on a volunteering expedition with the local nonprofit Mujeres Amigas Miles Apart (MAMA) Project, during which she brought her camera and captured the journey as an amateur while assisting in medical brigades and building a community center. A second trip with the same organization brought her back as a photojournalist on behalf of MAMA. In recent years Kristen has built a business that is established on the principles of embracing equality, diversity and community. These core values ground her projects in an enhanced awareness of the critical issues facing our world and, she hopes, suggest the intentional steps we can take to “be the change we wish to see in the world.”

Artist’s Statement
I am given the distinct pleasure of photographing families, couples, and individuals in their greatest moments of joy. Yet, I am acutely aware that these family portraits – experiences and objects that my day-to-day work positions as basic rites of passage – are an unattainable luxury to a vast percentage of the world.
The vision for this project stems from the deep rooted memory of what it meant to the individuals and families that I photographed in Honduras. To see their faces illuminated on the tiny screen of my camera brought them such joy. They relished the confirmation that their likeness was saved in space and time. They asked for nothing in return. The joy of knowing they were preserved, somewhere, served as elation enough.
These families will never know preserving a memory of their family in a moment in time. When loved ones pass on, they strain to remember faces when we hang portraits, scroll Facebook and flip through albums. I want to consider what happens when we take an object that is intrinsically a part of our society, an icon; such as the family portrait and we place it in an environment in which it is a privilege, typically left only to the elite. I want to wrestle with what it means to the viewer who receives this image of their family juxtaposed to the viewer who receives these images to behold on display in a gallery setting. It is worth considering this because it’s good to give and because it’s good to reflect, with gratitude, on the gamut of what he have, what we take for granted and what is valued sharing in the human experience.
The family portrait, be it casual snap shot, polaroid, disposable camera or an image preserved on archival canvas, captured by the most revered photographer of our time; it is not food, water or shelter, but it is the one possession that most people agree they would consider running back into a burning building to save, once all loved ones made it out safely.

Description of the work
“Retrato/Portrait” will capture what is likely to be the only portrait that these families will ever have in the remote regions of Honduras. Up to 400 families will be photographed on Fuji Film Instax 3.25”x4.4” instant film. One image will be provided to the family and second image will be retained by the photographer. The second image will be brought back, mounted and framed for a gallery exhibition.
